MB&F: The LM Perpetual EVO

Maximilian Büsser's Machines are the mechanical cartographers of the universe, taking their wearers to places only found on maps of the imagination, from star-cruisers to deep-sea jellyfish. With the debut of the first LM Perpetual EVO pieces in 2020, the EVO line saw a dramatic transformation, with its users taking on the role of navigators for their busy lifestyles; their lives became the map. They would never have to take their watch off on their excursion.

The LM Perpetual EVO was first introduced in three limited editions made of zirconium. A titanium variant featuring a green CVD dial plate was also released. In 2024, MB&F replaces its green dial-plate with a new one that is ice blue and comes in the same very durable titanium casing. Every version has an integrated, tightly-fitting rubber strap for the most comfortable wearing of any MB&F Machine to yet.

A 44mm case made of titanium or zirconium, two contemporary metals whose compositions are superior to those of stainless steel. a case study that highlights great clarity and transparency. FlexRing, a uniquely designed monobloc shock-absorbing system, creates the strongest Machine that MB&F has ever produced. Stephen McDonnell created the LM Perpetual Engine, an award-winning perpetual calendar that uses a cutting-edge mechanical processor in place of conventional structures.

Numerous complexities and prominent processes in horology have been welcomed into the MB&F collection. But since its launch in 2015, Legacy Machine Perpetual has remained at the pinnacle of MB&F watchmaking expertise when it comes to merging grandeur, history, and innovation.

The new EVO case design has a no-bezel construction with the domed sapphire crystal fused directly to the case, even though the 44mm diameter is the same as it was in 2015. The balance between the readable calendar indicators of the LM Perpetual EVO and the dramatic movement of the engine parts—topped by the recognisable MB&F hovering balance wheel—is emphasised by the design's greater openness. This massively expanded new LM Perpetual Engine display was not a straightforward redesign. It became necessary to compute new sapphire crystal geometries in order to accomplish the physically incompatible goals of preserving structural strength and lowering the height-to-diameter ratio. A complex heat bonding technique between the sapphire crystal and the casing was also required to release LM Perpetual EVO from the bezel.

To improve tactile comfort and simplicity of adjustment, the circular pushers used to change the perpetual calendar have been extended into double-sprung oblong actuators. The screw-down crown of the LM Perpetual EVO allows for an 80m water resistant rating. The débrayage of the winding stem, which disengages the crown from the winding mechanism as it is pushed in and tightened, is a minor but crucial element of using a screw-down crown. This reduces the possibility of manually over-winding the mainspring barrel.

The FlexRing, an annular dampener positioned between the casing and the movement to provide shock protection along the vertical and lateral axes, is another novel component of the LM Perpetual EVO. Made from a single stainless steel block, the damper gives the perpetual calendar—a feature associated with beauty and class—exceptional sturdiness. It is also, arguably, the most practical and useful of all the high complications.

Stephen McDonnell presented a solution that rethought the entire mechanical basis of the complication when he set out to create the perpetual calendar for MB&F. A "mechanical processor" made out of several stacked discs powers the LM Perpetual. Since all months logically contain at least 28 days, this innovative processor starts with the default count of 28 days every month and adds additional days as needed by each unique month. This eliminates the chance of dates hopping and guarantees that every month has precisely the proper amount of days. A built-in safety mechanism disconnects the quickset pushers as the date changes, preventing any possibility of movement harm even in the event that the pushers are inadvertently activated during the process.

Legacy Machine Perpetual EVO has been a development of your story with MB&F in terms of design, technique, and attitude.
