Refreshed Look and Relaunch for Kereama's Kota Kai.

This month marks the reopening of Chef Jude Kereama's well-liked family-style restaurant, Kota Kai following a significant renovation. Originally built by Kereama in 2011, the restaurant is located in the centre of the picturesque Cornish hamlet of Porthleven, with a view of the harbour and only a short distance from its sister establishment, Kota, which debuted to great reviews in 2006.

In an effort to offer a family-friendly option with integrity, Kota Kai was first established as a restaurant with an inviting and relaxed atmosphere, a delicious menu that distinguished itself from other family-friendly offerings, and an Asian-inspired menu that paid homage to Jude's heritage (he was born in New Zealand and is half Maori and half Chinese Malay). Thirteen years later, head chef Marcus Houghton and front-of-house manager Jenna Sawle are guiding Kai's relaunch. Completely renovated and refurbished, the restaurant still offers a warm welcome but has evolved into something a bit more refined.

Kereama said, “After 13 years, it felt like the right time to evolve the offering at Kota Kai to something a little bit more grown up. It is important to us that it still feels like a welcoming place for families, but is a destination for drinks and snacks too. The open plan layout really highlights our special location, drawing the eye to the views across the harbour. We also have a slightly different menu format with some great new dishes we've been working on, accompanied by an extensive drinks list. We are excited to introduce the changes to our guests.”

Together with Steve Coombe from 3idog, Kereama and his group renovated the restaurant's interiors and presented the update's concept. In order to create a more serene and well-coordinated room, a new colour scheme has been added, along with more natural materials and textures. There's a new eating setup and a large, statement bar. The walls are decorated with photographs by Jack Johns, artwork by local artists including Felix Griffiths, Zed Van G, and Jo Hague, and bespoke handcrafted lights by Lovelinkin Baskets.

Kota Kai is the perfect spot for a dinner with a view of the harbour or a beverage and snack with friends. It features a large cocktail menu created by Chris Jarrett, aka The Bearded Barman, a wine list that includes several New World wines, and a newly renovated bar area. During the summer, patrons may enjoy sea views while sitting outside and placing orders from the bar located on the ground level. Kai, which has 90 covers, is a bustling, well-liked spot with amazing views, a relaxed vibe, and delicious food. A Josper grill is set to debut at Kota Kai, adding a smoky flavour to foods prepared over charcoal. With dishes like Charsiu Monkfish over grilled Gear Farm greens and Cornish Hanger steak with Asian herb sauce, Jude will be sourcing some of the greatest ingredients from Cornwall and the West Country.

Kota and Kota Kai, which are on the South West Coastpath, are great places for hikers and visitors of all ages to experience true Cornish warmth and generosity. Along with his late wife Jane, Jude is an enthusiastic and hands-on chef who was a founding member of the Porthleven Food Festival, which takes place on April 26–28, 2024. In addition to often lending his time and expertise to charitable causes in the South West, he has competed as the South West's representative on the BBC's Great British Menu. It is understandable why so many customers frequent his eateries, given his friendliness and love for Cornwall and its abundance.
