Riverside Retreat Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta.

Banyan Tree Group's new minimalist brand Garrya is expanding internationally with the inauguration of Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta on the Indonesian island of Java. Previous hotel debuts under the Garrya banner took place in China, Japan, and Thailand in 2017. Garrya is a tranquil area intended for simple living, cultural immersion, and real experiences, inspired by Asian sensibilities and natural components.

Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta, situated on the banks of the Denggung River in the tranquil village of Gabugan in Yogyakarta's Sleman Region, embodies the area's rich traditions and takes design cues from Javanese culture and Yogyakarta's famous temple. Arte Architect and Associates centred pyramid-like structures in a stunning inner courtyard, which complemented a joglo-style lobby wrapped in reclaimed wood, to bring guests closer to the rich history of old Javanese architecture. Meanwhile, a focus on sustainable architecture has influenced a commitment to green construction methods and the use of eco-friendly materials like terracotta bricks and teakwood to create elaborate carvings.

There will be 24 contemporary villas at the resort, as well as a two-bedroom residential villa with a full-size pool, gazebo, jacuzzi, and huge living area, and a distinctive Wellbeing Sanctuary Villa for the ultimate restorative experience. The villas are perfect for those in search of solitude on a romantic retreat or quality time with loved ones, thanks to their minimalist design, private plunge pools, and decor that blends the best of Javanese tradition with modern influences.

The four-room 8-Elements Spa at Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta will emphasise Asian-inspired indigenous wellness therapies, in keeping with the resort's emphasis on mindfulness and wellbeing. Group wellness activities for guests include yoga by the river on the terrace, dancing classes at the Movement Studio, and gym sessions.

Meanwhile, the food at Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta will be a delicious ode to the city's illustrious culinary heritage. The "Refresh" all-day eating area, the "Kopi Zop" lounge and bar, and the resort's private dining room will provide a selection of traditional Javanese meals prepared using locally sourced ingredients. In addition to the specialised event area providing a refreshing backdrop for meetings in the natural environment, guests will have the opportunity to buy locally crafted arts and crafts at the on-site shop.

Visitors to Yogyakarta can see performances of classical Javanese dance and gamelan music at one of the many outdoor pavilions of the Sultan's Palace. Another must-see is Kotagede, a posh Yogyakarta neighbourhood and the country's silver capital.

“Following the success of our first minimalist resorts under the Garrya brand, we are excited to bring our holistic approach to wellbeing and relaxation to the beautiful island of Java with the opening of Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta,” said Philip Lim, Senior Vice President, Head of Regional Operations and Group Specialist Services at Banyan Tree Group. “We look forward to welcoming travellers seeking a sense of seclusion and immersion into nature, with a keen curiosity about the rich cultural heritage and vibrant arts scene of Yogyakarta.”
