The Art of Speed: How a Wireframe Porsche 934 Became a £201,000 Masterpiece

In the world of automotive art, few creations have captured the imagination quite like Benedict Radcliffe’s breathtaking 1:1 scale wireframe sculpture of the legendary Porsche 934. A fusion of engineering prowess and artistic vision, this remarkable piece recently made headlines after selling for an astounding £201,000 on Collecting Cars—more than three times the price of a classic 930-series 911 Turbo. But what makes this piece so extraordinary?

The Porsche 934 is an icon of endurance racing, instantly recognisable in its Jägermeister livery, a car that once roared down the world’s greatest circuits. Radcliffe’s wireframe sculpture, however, takes the visceral thrill of motorsport and reinterprets it into something ethereal—an arresting silhouette of speed, seemingly frozen in motion.

The hand-crafted masterpiece, meticulously designed to replicate the shape and dimensions of the real Porsche 934, is more than just an art installation. It is a celebration of automotive culture, precision, and nostalgia. Its skeletal form allows light and shadow to dance across its surface, making it a dynamic display piece from every angle.

When Collecting Cars listed the sculpture for auction, it was clear that this was no ordinary piece of automobilia. Within just seven days, the listing had amassed over 6,000 views and attracted 218 bids, culminating in a sale price that would make even the most hardened collectors sit up and take notice. Ultimately, a passionate collector in Asia secured the winning bid, proving that the appeal of automotive art knows no boundaries.

Edward Lovett, Founder and CEO of Collecting Cars, perfectly encapsulated the significance of the sale:

“The Porsche 934, in its Jägermeister livery, is one of the most iconic racing cars of its type, and this sale of the sculpture that it evokes, is one that will go down in the history books. It’s proof of the breadth of automobilia available on Collecting Cars and the power of our community and bidders on the platform. We can’t wait to see the sculpture in situ with our client in Asia—it’s going to be a great talking piece.”

Before finding its new home, this striking sculpture had already embarked on a global tour worthy of a championship-winning race car. First unveiled at Milan Design Week in 2022, the wireframe Porsche 934 took centre stage at the prestigious Larusmiani store on Via Monte Napoleone. From there, it travelled to Beijing and Shanghai, where it was exhibited in collaboration with Porsche China, cementing its reputation as a masterpiece that bridges both the automotive and art worlds.

Traditionally, car collectors have focused on rare and exotic automobiles that can be driven, but Radcliffe’s sculpture challenges this notion. Here, the essence of a car is captured not in horsepower and torque but in delicate steel lines and artistic interpretation.

With its record-breaking sale, this wireframe Porsche 934 is more than just a work of art—it’s a testament to the enduring allure of motorsport and the power of artistic creativity. Whether viewed as a statement piece, an investment, or a tribute to an iconic racing machine, one thing is certain: this sculpture is built for the ages.
